Date of Origin: 19th century
Country: England
Original Function: Estates' Guarding
Other Name: Gamekeeper's Nightdog The Bullmastiff's ancestors, the Bulldog and the Mastiff, contributed much to its appearance, physical characteristics, and personality. Aiming for perfect protection qualities, Mosley S. E. produced a massive breed with a good sense of smell. Bullmastiffs were agile enough to quickly reach for a poacher and hold his victim until a gamekeeper ceased the criminal.  The Bullmastiff originated in 1791. The Kennel Club of the UK gave the breed the first recognition in 1924. The Bullmastiff is called a man-made breed created from 60 percent Mastiff and 40 percent Bulldog. Bullmastiffs were originally bred for protection of gamekeepers against poachers.

Bullmastiffs are said to be "Faithful and Fearless, but not ferocious" gentle and devoted dogs. They are quiet and easy-going, and will hardly ever bark unless they have a good reason for it. The dog's short coat, which is usually brindle, red, or fawn requires little grooming. In terms of exercise the Bullmastiff is an excellent dog to keep.
